TIPS

EUROPE TRAVEL TIP #1

PACING   The magnetism and mystique of Europe is so great that temptation is to try to see it all in one trip. That would be a mistake. To really absorb the feel of a country, you need to spend some quality time there. After seeing the highlight sights, take the time to wander little cobblestone side streets, sit in a sidewalk cafe sipping wine and participating in Europe's favorite passtime, people watching. Stop in a sandwich shop and buy the makings for a picnic in a marvelous park. Wander into a small church and discover stunning works of art most tourists never see.

TIPS

EUROPE TRAVEL TIP #2

TRANSPORTATION   Americans expect to rent a car to go exploring, but they may be making a poor choice.  Car rental is usually surprisingly expensive and so is fuel (often $8-$10 a gallon). Parking is likely to be difficult to find. Roads and streets may not be well marked or signage may be in a "foreign" language.

Why not do it the way most Europeans do it -- ride the train between cities or countries. The rail system is amazingly fast, efficient, spacious and comfortable. Within cities, taxis are plentiful but, for nearby locations walking is THE way to really get the feel of the place. For going across town, many cities have inexpensive and very efficient subways and trolly systems.
